High Definition Broadcasting And How It Affects Make-up & Hair Artists

What is HDTV?

HDTV images are brighter, sharper, cleaner and more life like than those of normal TV's because of the increased pixilation in the image. Therefore, HD is the highest quality digital format available over the present NTSC standard format, which has been in existence for over 60 years.

How does HD TV affect makeup ?

The increased pixilated image is so clear that you see the pores of skin. Blemishes and wrinkles are more apparent. It shows the person’s true quality of skin, bone structure and features, and hair are on sharp display.
HDTV can provide images nearly 5-10 times sharper than those on broadcast on standard television sets. Meaning if heavier makeup is applied it is more visable. Many makeup artists (and talent) are still somewhat inexperienced to the harsh reality of the high definition format and that skin
imperfections are extremely obvious. Some skin issues you can clearly see are blemishes (especially acne problems), overdone concealing under the eyes (the raccoon look), thickly applied base and over-powdered skin.
Non-micronised setting powders are inclined to show on HD. Use a micronised powder and you should have few problems. Dusted off properly, the powder particle size is just too small to read on camera. A number of manufacturers produce such powders suitable for use on HD.

Top tips for Make up on HD TV

Airbrushing is good to use for HD Television, the cosmetics that are used for this technique are made from micronised pigments that are not detectable on the camera. It ejects compressed air and will leave a lightweight look and give the great illusion of flawless skin. Its also very fast to use which is good when you have many people to do on a set.
