Final Project Evaluation

Overall I've really enjoyed both the projects we've had, I probably say I preferred these projects over our first ever project purely because we had  more to expand and we were a loud to do what we
wanted as in we had more creative expression. I really liked the fact we were taught prosthetic's which was something I was interested in, we were also taught a lot more skills which we can use in the future towards our careers. I definitely say I feel more like a Hair and Make up artist.

I wasn't too sure when we were looking at horror TV shows and that we had to put two characters into it, as I don't normally watch horror films and shows as they just don't appeal to me. We were given a list of series to chose from I'd heard of a lot of them but never seen them, however they Penny Dreadful was on the list I'd never heard of the series so I decided to watch it. It was definitely scary however I was very interested which actually surprised me, I liked how it had character that I'd heard such as Dorian Gray and Victor Frankenstein. I struggled figuring out how I was going to place Claudia and Quentin into Penny Dreadful however after eventually coming up with an idea I loved it. My next mission was to find models which again I found hard as I didn't know any guys who'd be comfortable with me applying makeup to them. I'm lucky my sister was able to be my Claudia as she fit my vision of her and then I eventually found a suitable Quentin, it was funny I was very picky on who I thought would fit my vision. I did come up to a bump when I was shooting Claudia as I struggled without my camera which I left in halls so I had to make do with my sisters iPhone which didn't turn out too badly I also wished I'd taken pictures of every angle of my model. I loved how my Quentin turned out as it was very simple with just the stitches on his face and body. Overall I'm really happy with the turn outs of both my looks.

Evaluations of Both Claudia and Quentin

When we got the brief to create Claudia and either Mrs Laderman or Quentin I was very confused at the start as I didn't realize that we had to put them in a TV series of our choice. I did struggle putting Claudia in the TV Series Penny Dreadful but once I figured out how I want her to be portrayed I was fine. I really enjoyed creating the presentation we had to make in order to pitch our ideas as I feel everyone understood where I was coming from and how I wanted Claudia to be presented. I was very happy with the Make up look I created on my Model to portray Claudia and I really think I stuck to my Mood Board I'd created for her. I was very lucky my sister really fit how I in visioned her to be like. I like the setting of my Claudia shoot however I wished I'd thought about it more as I wished I'd removed things in my Garage that didn't fit the Victorian theme but I like the fact I've got my Mothers feet in the background to represent a rotting corpse. I'd say the only thing I would do next time is get more shots of Claudia's makeup and wished I'd taken a picture of her hair. I was in the heat of the moment and I completely forgot to take one. I wished I'd brought my camera because in the end I took the image with my Sisters i-Phone as I couldn't work my dad's camera, I think the quality of the images is ok but they could have been better. Overall I'm happy with the images and my idea.

I'm so happy with how my Images of Quentin turned out they were exactly how I pictured them in my head. In all honestly these images didn't require a lot of work. This was actually the first time I'd put make up on a guy, I was slightly nervous prior. I think maybe I could have made my image of Quentin in reality slightly more corpse looking however I still like them. The image of Quentin in Claudia's eyes was very simple and innocent looking which I appreciated. Overall I happy with how it turned out.

I'm really happy with how my Practice went as I think it looked very similar to my face chart. It was definitely important for me to practice as I wanted to make sure the face chart I'd created would fit my Claudia in vision.

Lynda Armstrong was the Make up Artist in this film. She Created a bold lip with a dark smokey eye. Cruella's make up helped play a role in creating her persona as a Villain.

Developing my Quentin character:

Creating Deep Stitches Using Rigid Collodion

So for My Quentin Face Chart I wanted to create stitches, so I used YouTube to do some research on how to create my look. I came across a lot of Guru's using Rigid Collodion, this clear liquid in dents the skin and pulls at the same time. BINGO !! I wanted my Quentin to be inspired by Frankenstein's Creature in the TV show, however I changed it because my Quentin isn't alive so I don't want any blood. I want to make it very simple too.

Here is my first Attempt using Rigid Collodion it was such a weird sensation. But the effect is so cool, perfect for my Creation. Only thing I didn't like was that I had to keep applying the liquid over and over again to get the fake 'cut' deeper, this took a while to get it like this.

Quentin Face Chart

This face Chart demonstrates how Claudia see Quentin. I wanted Quentin to be very good looking, with minimal makeup just to enhance his natural features. 

This face Chart represents Quentin in reality, he is covered in stitches from Claudia's experiment. I kept him good looking, I didn't want to make it too gory, as in fact it's just a rotting corpse in reality.

I knew I wanted to create Quentin inspired by Victor Frankenstein's monster, so I decided to look at stitches. I liked the look of the stapled keeping to cut sealed. 

Claudia Face Chart and Hair Chart

I decided to create Claudia with dark makeup as she is slightly evil as she has created Quentin for her Selfish needs. I liked how this really fits Gothic Horror as it dark and kinda of scary looking.

Because Penny Dreadful is set the Victorian Era I decided to stick to a typical early Victorian Hair style as it fit my vision of Claudia the most.

Quentin Colour Palette

My Mood board shows two sides of Quentin. First the left side shows him in Claudia's eyes, she imagines she's created this perfect soul mate, who reflects her exactly. He's a typical good looking guy as this is how she made him. However on the right side of my Mood Board this is the reality, Quentin is merely a rotting corpse on a surgery table covered in stitches. I wanted my colour palette to reflect the colours in my mood board which again is very dark.

So looking at my Mood Board you can see how there are two sides to Claudia. There's the darkness inside her and her beauty on the outside. I wanted my Claudia to be very dark and vampy, as throughout Penny Dreadful it is very dark and so is the setting. I decided I want the makeup to be very dark and I want her clothes to reflect this too. Vanessa in the TV series wore a lot of corsets, so I want Claudia to fit reasonably with the fashion of the Victorian era. My mood board reflects the colours in my colour palette which are dark and vampy. The other side of Mood board explains her mentality and how she is unstable.

• Quentin is Claudia’s attempt at creating her soul mate, however she imagines that her creation has worked but it’s all in her mind. 
• In her mind Quentin is a handsome gentleman that is devoted to her, but in reality Quentin is a rotting corpse lying on a surgery table. 
• He will appeal to the audience demographic as when the viewers are looking through her eyes he will be this attractive heart throb, however when Claudia is not there he is a rotting corpse.
• I want him to be covered in stitches when it't not through Claudia's eyes. 
• For when he seen through her eye's I want him to look very attractive with a perfect skin.

Key Word - Stitches

• I chose this key word as I was inspired by Frankenstein's monster who was stitched together with body part from a number of different corpses. 
• I looked into different interpretations of Frankenstein’s monster for my design inspiration of Quentin. 
• After Claudia has stitched Quentin’s body parts together she think he’s brought to life however in reality he isn't.

The Audience Demographic for Penny Dreadful

• The original books demographic was men. 
• The demographics for this TV Series is 18 – 49 for both men and women, it received the most views from a younger audience beating the TV Series Dexter in 2006. 
• The reason why it received a younger audience than expected was due to that the series explores popular contemporary characters such as Werewolves and Vampires

• Claudia is going to fit into the TV series Penny Dreadful by being Victor Frankenstein's apprentice, she shadows his research and experiments.
• However Claudia doesn't know that Victor has created life previously, so she takes it into her on hands to make her soul mate/companion Quentin.

•  In her imagination she creates Quentin who is perfect to her, unfortunately due to unstable mentality the experiment doesn't actually work in reality and Quentin is merely a rotting corpse on a surgery table.
• I want Claudia to be very attractive as this will link better with the TV series as I personally think the female characters are all very good looking - this will help appeal to the my target audience.
• Her makeup will be very dark and Vampy as this will reflect her darkness of her soul.
• I want her to be styled similar to what the female characters wore in the series - possibly a corset to accentuate her figure.
• Claudia will be quite young, maybe younger than Victor her mentor.
• I see the setting being somewhere old and dark maybe a basement surrounded by tools for experiments. 

Key Word - Spiral

• I decided to chose the word Spiral because as a character she is spiralling out of control. 
• I used the word spiral to look into the downfall of mental health patients as this is the path Claudia is heading towards. 
• The scene I am placing Claudia in is where she is sewing Quentin together. Claudia will be wearing a black corset on top of a black dress.
